Orašac is associated with one of the most significant events in the Serbian national history which marked the establishment of the modern Serbian state.
On Sretenje i.e. Februrary 15, 1804, the First Serbian Uprising against Ottoman rule took place here and Đorđe Petrović Karađorđe was elected the supreme leader.
Due to the great historical importance of this event and of the site itself as the place of its outbreak, Orašac has been protected as a famous historical site.
The memorial complex, as a place of collective memory of famous ancestors, consists of the church, memorial school, memorial fountain, the memorial tomb of Teodosije Marićević and the monument to Karađorđe
