Risovača Cave is located on the hill of the same name on the right of the Kubršnica, a small river at the very entrance to Aranđelovac, 75 km from Belgrade. It was accidentally discovered during stone mining works and the first scientific explorations began in 1953.

In the Old Stone Age, from 50,000 to 35,000 years ago, an extinct human species found their shelter in Risovača cave. These were Neanderthals, the first intelligent people, skilled hunters and fruit gatherers, who left traces of their existence here – their tools made of stone and bones.

In the rich cave deposits, the researchers have found thousands of fossil remains of extinct animal species that inhabited these areas tens of thousands of years ago – cave bear, cave lion, cave hyena, giant i.e. Irish deer, steppe rhinoceros, steppe bison, auroch, quagga etc.

Interesting surprises await visitors in the underground labyrinth. The sight of a family gathered around a fire revives a moment from the daily life of our distant relatives. In the darkness of cave passages, we can spot some animal species which, with the Ice Age, disappeared off the face of the Earth.

The cave ornaments of extraordinary beauty and various shapes created by the water in cave tunnels and chambers leave a special impression on the audience.
Today, there is someone still living in Risovačka cave. In addition to insects and arachnids, the cave is inhabited by horseshoe bats, and the Risovačka fauna also includes an endemic insect species belonging to the Trechus sp genus, which is a valuable scientific discovery.

As an important archaeological site, Risovača has been declared a cultural asset of great importance. Due to their natural features, the cave and its surroundings have been protected as a natural resource of exceptional importance i.e., natural monument.
